Mahila Nivas

Being the first lady magistrate of Assam, Suchibrata Roychoudhury always felt the need for a safe residential place for the working women in Guwahati, especially from the low-income group. Hence, a hostel was established in 1975 in Narengi.

It is the first hostel for working women in the state, started under the scheme of the Central Social Welfare Board. The hostel has well-established rules and regulations, framed under the guidelines issued by the CSWB, and are strictly followed.

The Association received a grant-in-aid under the scheme of Central Social Welfare Board through Assam State Social Welfare Advisory Board till 1979-80 to meet the recurring expenses of the hostel on a matching basis. However, after 1980, it hasn’t received any other grants and thereafter maintains all establishments costs with its own resources i.e., a minimal seat rent charged from the hostel residents. This hostel runs on a no- profit set-up.

Amenities & facilities provided:

  • Furnished single and double-occupancy rooms at Rs. 1200/- per month (includes, electricity and water)

  • Provision to serve lunch, evening snacks, dinner at a minimal cost

  • Doctor on call

  • Community hall with library

  • 5 minutes to reach the bus stop

  • A thorough background check is a part of the admission process to ensure safety
